Japanese Oni

Setsubun is a Japanese festival celebrated on the 3rd of February, when Winter turns to Spring. Families celebrate by throwing roasted soybeans outside the door of their homes to chase out Oni (the naughty ogres or spirits) or by throwing soybeans at Dad dressed up like an Oni!

When the beans are thrown, the children (and adults) shout, "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" which means ‘Oni out! Happiness in!’
The beans are thrown to chase the bad spirits out of the home and bring happiness or good luck for the following year.
Today our Foundation students were greeted by Oni in the playground. Lucky for them, they knew how to drive Oni away. “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!”
